Let’s hear it for Uncle Sam. He eats over six thousand Americans each day.

The genesis for the picture was an episode of the PBS show Frontline, where they tackled the issues of America’s failing health system. One figure they brought up was that more than 20,000 Americans die each year because they can't get access to the healthcare they need. The issue always comes down is money (or lack thereof) or the games insurance companies play with coverage. Either way I started thinking about some of the ways the American system kills Americans, whether through lack of healthcare, the military, or other means. This picture sprung out of those thoughts.

Check out the Frontline episode here.

There’s a bunch of interesting info about Uncle Sam on Wikipedia. To summarize, according to American mythology, Uncle Sam is the enduring personification of the United States. Aside from other functions, he’s often seen lobbying support for the military and US treasury.

Wow! Crazy illustration. Yeah I'm one of those w/out any health insurance. I really like how you made the shape of the blood into the US and Alaska at the top. Quite clever!

I tell you, at least it's an effective picture.

Still would rather live here than a third-world shithole where millions die each year and no one at ALL seems to act on it, much less give it the amount of thought it takes to even register an image like this.

I'm not sure we realize how good we have it anyway.

I'm on the fence.

I have coverage, but that's because I pay for it, and went out of my way to have a job with the possibility of benefits.

I have to pay for my coverage. I don't exactly see the balance in the equation if I have to pay, someone else doesn't, and we get the same treatment. Something doesn't seem right there. You take the money out of medicine, you'll take all the advancements out of it to. Sad thing that is human nature.

As for the picture, I'd definitely say you got the point across, lol. Uncle Sam looks brutal as hell there. NOM NOM NOM

Meh. As a former member of the U.S. military, and a war veteran, I'd have to say that the deaths of soldiers don't count as being killed by the American system. The military is entirely optional, and anyone who serves signed a contract of their own free will.

The health care is an entirely different issue, though. That REALLY needs to get fixed.

Good picture, and nice concept.^^
